Gabe was not a fan of cemeteries. He’d visited his parents’ graves a few times each year, but he’d never found the peace others claimed graveyards provided. When he wanted to feel close to Ma and Pa, he’d walk by the house they’d once shared. Gabe had sold it after Pa’s death, not needing all that space and not wanting the constant reminder that his parents were gone. Now a young family lived there, their three boys frolicking in the yard where he’d once played fetch with his dog. That sight brought him more comfort than kneeling by his parents’ graves.

On an ordinary day, Gabe would not have entered the cemetery, but when he saw Calvin making his way there and remembered how he’d stared at another grave during Mrs. Lockhart’s funeral, Gabe decided to follow the man.

“Did you know him?” he asked when he reached Calvin. Alexandra’s father stood in front of a simple wooden cross bearing the name Phil Blakeslee.

“He was the closest thing to a son I’ve ever had.” Though Calvin was dry-eyed, genuine sorrow colored his voice. “He wasn’t supposed to die. The hotel was going to be my gift to him, but now . . .” Calvin stopped short. “What are you doing here?”

“You looked like you needed a friend. I thought maybe I could help.” He gestured toward a nearby bench. “Do you want to talk about him? Sometimes that helps.”

For a moment, Calvin appeared torn. Then he nodded. “When I first met Phil, he was shining shoes and picking pockets, but I could tell that he’d been raised for a better life. I did what I could to help him, and he repaid me with unwavering loyalty.” Calvin paused, apparently debating whether to say more. “I’d like to think he loved me.”

The uncertainty in the older man’s voice touched Gabe more than anything he’d said, and in that moment, he realized that for all the pain he’d wreaked on others, Calvin Tarkington had done some good. He might appear cold and distant, but he was capable of love. If only he could lavish that love on his daughter.
